Ryan Kanno: The diary of an Enginerd in Hawaii

Everything you’ve ever thought, but never had the balls to say.

To Wii or not to Wii?

As a Gen-Y’er (yes, I’m 28-years old), I grew up with a generation immersed in video games. Yet, I’ve found that the older I get, the less I categorize myself as a ‘gamer’. My PS2 and Xbox are collecting dust in the corner of my closet, the PSP and Nintendo DS were novelties for a few months, and I’ve completely forgotten where I’ve even placed my Dreamcast and Gamecube.

I can’t pinpoint the precise moment my interest began to wane, but I’m still wondering what happened to the days of Secret of Mana, Dragon Warrior, and Mike Tyson’s Super Punchout?

(Wow, that just really dated me.)

Now that we’re on the cusp of a new generation of consoles (see PS3, Xbox360, and the Wii), sorta like we were back in 2000, I’ve been contemplating what console to shell out some dolla-dolla bills. Since the Xbox360 was first to market, I’ve been there, done that.

Final verdict: Not impressed.

So with one down, and two to go… I haven’t made up my mind and there’s only a few weeks to launch. I have been keeping a close eye on some neat Wii innovations and coupled with Sony’s overheating problems - I might just have to go back to the old school. Check out the youtube video below from the EA Madden developers describing Wii-specific functionality.

I think I know which way I’m leaning…

Aww.. no comments. Would you like to be the first?
